I've been working adding to the White Scars lately, specifically bikers:

1850 RTT at Huzzah Hobbies (8/18/13)

I entered my NOVA list in an 1850 RTT this weekend at Huzzah Hobbies in Ashburn VA yesterday.  In prep for the NOVA, we were using terrain and missions from the NOVA primer.  I ended up going 1 and 2, vs Space Wolves, Demons and Eldar. I did however walk away with best painted! (I'll take that!  and a $25 gift certificate) 

First a bit of a plug for Huzzah; they're running the only regular 40K RTT series in Northern VA that I know of -- the third Sunday of every month.  Any given month they use the tournament packet for whichever is the next big GT coming which in addition to helping out folks who are planning to go to that GT get some practice, also gives folks a chance to test drive the next GT.  Huzzah gives a 10% discount on GW product.


The first game was 5 objectives Vanguard Strike deployment vs Drop-Podding Space Wolves with Logan, 2 Rune Priests, a unit of Long Fangs and Grey Hunters.  I won that one when my opponent lost mission focus and kept dropping his pods on my home objective, allowing my podding Grey Hunters,  and Vendetta-riding SWS and PCS to take the other two.

The second game was vs Demons; Fateweaver, 2 Flying DP's, screamers and pink horrors, ignominious loss.   Very nicely painted army -- probably my main competition for best appearance, from what I saw.  It was the highly converted nature of my army (the Manticore and the KV-2 Russ) though, that made the difference.

The third game was Iyanden Eldar with a Wraithknight as his Warlord and another Wraithknight, Wave Serpent spam and Warp Spiders, lost this one, did manage to down one Wraith Knight (not the Warlord) with Missiles (the RPG's will not be denied!) and all but one of the Wave Serpents.  I don't know which I hate more, Wraith Knights or Wave Serpents.  Having faced those damn things now, I don't want to hear any complaints if Faeit's rumor about Baneblades being in the IG codex turn out to be true.

All in all a good tournament, my opponents were generally cool, and learning (on my part) did occur.

 Here's a small model that my wife and I did for a conversion contest; I did the conversion and green-stuff, she did the painting. 

Uriah Jacobus Painted

Here's my Uriah Jacobus conversion that I wrote about previously all painted up, the color scheme is intended to match with my wife's Sisters.  The main color of the robes is the old Liche Purple, I'm not sure what it's called in the new colors, with a red-gore tabard with blood read highlights.  The flames were based with Mechrite Red then highlighted with Blazing Orange, Iyanden Dark Sun and White, I finished the flames with a bit of yellow ink.

Blood Angels Fans May Wish to Look Away

Not my work, but I wanted to share this:  at my FLGS, a young Blood Angels player had for months been putting a half-painted Storm Raven on the table.  Finally, one of the regulars at the shop decided that he couldn't take it any longer and offered to paint it.  He decided that Death Company black would be cool with red outlines -- kind of an homage to the 'A-Team' van.  But he exacted a price, a price some may find too high to bear.  That price is revealed after the jump...

Winning a Painting Contest, In Spite of Myself

My FLGS held a painting competition this past Saturday.  In preparation, I've spent the last two or three weeks lovingly re-converting (more on that in another post) and painting my Ragnarok pattern Leman Russ.  Finished painting it yesterday morning.


 Packed it up in a nice padded box and drove off to my FLGS.  Get to my FLGS and realize... I forgot to bring the silly box.  Well, my FLGS is about 45 minutes from home and I was playing in a small tournament at the store so driving home to get the thing wasn't really an option; great.

Vostroyan Transfers

Currently, the only way to get the Vostroyan markings is to either buy the transfer sheet from the Baneblade/Shadowsword or to free-hand it.  I will not claim to be able to free-hand it so I'm limited to using transfers.  Unfortunately, the Transfers on the Baneblade sheet are not necessarily a good size for use on something like a Chimera hull, also the numbers only go up to 3.  The "v" to the left can be scaled up/down to suit and printed out on  ink-jet water-slide paper.  The numbers are even easier -- they match a font in called 'Agent-FB" in  MS Power-Point (and probably other software as well).  Here are some samples of the numbers I developed  to use  on my Vostroyan tanks:

The downside is that white ink is not an option unless you have a now extinct Alps printer available to you (if anybody knows an option for white, please let me know)  Using white background paper is an option, albeit a tricky proposition to blend in.

Another neat trick is to try differ color combos digitally before committing to the model.  Heres my heavily converted Medusa with different color schemes for the numbers:

 

I'll probably go with the third option as it matches the Vostroyan 'V' the best.

The cargo hold interior, doors, crew and cockpit were painted prior to assembly, then I masked off the doorways and cockpit before painting the exterior. Everything was primed black. The exterior was basecoated with Bestial Brown, then dry-brushed with Graveyard Earth, followed by progressively lightened mixtures of Graveyard and Kommando Khaki. The Interior and cockpit are Codex grey with highlights of Fortress grey.
