Axe Men

Since Power axes are all the rage now for IG sergeants, I decided to build a few great coats with power axes.

Great Coat Heavy Weapons

I'm adding heavy weapons to my Great Coat platoon, specifically, missile launchers.  In keeping with the Russian flavor of my Great Coats, I opted to modify the GW missile launcher to resemble something more like an RPG-7 with an oversized warhead on the nose of the missile.

Even More Greatcoats

I decided to add 2 squads to my Greatcoat platoon, nothing really ground-breaking, adding flamers to the basic infantry squads.   With 6th ed adding grenade throwing to the mix I also added a grenade chucking lasman to the mix, also a guy with a Necromunda lasgun for variety:

So currently here's the whole platoon:  4 squads, platoon command squad with meltas and a special weapons squad with meltas.

Future plans include adding heavy weapons, either missile launchers or autocannons

Old Stuff Day, 2012

Yay old stuff day!  Though as infrequently as I post it may be redundant! OK here's a repost of one of my most popular -- Great Coat Guard, combined into one easy post.

I picked up a box of the Wargames Factory Shock Troops to build
some great coated Guardsmen to use as regular troops alongside of my Vostroyan Veterans.   I built and painted up two models as a test and I think they work.  The WGF bodies combined with GW arms and the Pig Iron Winter Militia heads make for some nice unique looking models.

My first platoon of greatcoats are ready to be primed; well at least the troops are.  This platoon will be lead by Al-Rahem or at least my great-coated interpretation.  Al or Alexei Romanov as I'm calling him is still a WIP.  First up is the platoon command squad with 3 meltas.

Next we have the balance of the first squad that goes with the prototypes that appear on the top of the page

And finally the second squad.

I decided to portray these guys as a rather motley hive-militia auxiliary to the First Born Veterans  hence they get an eclectic mix of lasguns scrounged from the battlefield including Catachan and Steel Legion las-carbines.  If I build another squad, I'll throw in a few lasguns from the Necromunda weapons sprue.

Wargames Factory Shock Troops Heavy Weapons -- Preview Review

WGF - used without permission
Wargames Factory has posted up a preview of the Heavy Weapons crews to go with their Great Coat Shock Troops.  I love the basic troops -- they're great conversion fodder, as you can see here, here, and here.  Here are my thoughts on the preview.

The preview appears shots of the CAD drawings so hopefully they'll still be able to incorporate some of the comments folks have left.  First off, it looks like WGF is trying to step up the level of detail on the new models -- this is both a plus  and a minus -- on the plus side, the upper torsos feature a new, more detailed armor design that will make great carapace armor.  On the minus side, they aren't cohesive with the old Shock Troopers.  Likewise with the new helmets -- they look good but they remind me more of french WW1 helmets than the coal scuttles of the original troopers.  Of course, I'll probably use pig-iron heads anyway so not a big deal for me.

The kneeling pose on the mortar-man is welcome but the squatting pose on the other gunner is a bit of a miss  in my opinion -- I can't quite see using it with a heavy weapon though perhaps with some thought I can come up with other uses for it.

Finallly the heavy weapons themselves are a bit of a mixed bag -- the twin-linked gatling gun has potential (Hydra conversion anyone?)  the beam weapon not as much.  The missile launcher and the mortar look fine, though I'd lose the paws on the bipod.

I'll probably buy at least one box of these guys just to play around with.  I can solve some of the cohesiveness problems with a razon saw to mix and match the upper torsos from the standing shock troopers with the kneeling legs.  Likewise that will enable the use of the new torsos for Carapace Armor.

Al Rahem

The great coats will be lead by Al Rahem (or Alexei Romanov to fit the theme) .   Since he's a special character he's being built up to be, well especially characterful.  First off, I'm using the great-coat legs from the Cadian command squad box.  They fit in with the other WGF great coats while looking a bit more up-scale what with him being an officer and all.

For the torso, I went with the medals torso -- hey, he's a hero of the Imperium, right?  Al is equipped with a plasma pistol so that was a gimme.

Great Coat Guard/Hot-Shot Lasguns

I picked up a box of the Wargames Factory Shock Troops to build
some great coated Guardsmen to use as regular troops alongside of my Vostroyan Veterans.   I built and painted up two models as a test and I think they The WGF bodies combined with GW arms and the Pig Iron Winter Militia heads make for some nice unique looking models.

Since I used GW arms for these guys, I have plenty of the guns that came with the shock troops left over.  Obviously these would make great looking shotguns, but I've also been looking for a modeling solution for  a hot-shot lasgun -- by combining the shotgun with the muzzle piece of the Catachan lasgun I now have pretty heavy-duty looking lasgun.
